What is Biogas?
The UK is committed to reducing carbon emissions and is focused on reducing the use of Natural Gas. Biogas, which is carbon neutral, is produced from renewable energy sources including agricultural materials, along with food and water waste. By using biogas, you help lower greenhouse gasses.
How is Biogas created?
Green Gas (Biomethane) can be produced from a number of sources including biogas from anaerobic digestion, landfill gas and synthetic gas (‘syngas’) from the gasification of biomass. All these gases can be converted to biomethane by removing the CO2.
Harvesting Biogas with anaerobic digesters is a truly sustainable process. Digesters break down (digest) a wide variety of raw materials.
Most existing biogas plants in the UK use biodegradable matter such as:
- Slurry from UK Farms
- Bio Crops
- Animal manure
- Landfill gas
- Crops such as grass
- Organic waste such as Food and Amenity waste
- Agricultural crops such as corn
- Human sewage
Biogas production is growing rapidly, although still not widely available. This results in a significant price premium compared with Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), the carbon based
alternative. It has a very low carbon footprint as it is harvested from gases released during natural processes.

Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs)
Each kWh of green gas is labeled electronically with a unique identifier known as a Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin (RGGO). This identifier contains, for each kWh of gas, information about where, when and how it was produced. When consumers buy green gas the RGGO is their guarantee that the gas is authentic and has not been sold to anyone else. The range of RGGOs is listed on the consumer’s certificate and can be validated.
